Pre-occupancy inspection
Our Practices / Pre-occupancy inspection
Verify compliance before cccupancy
Before a new or renovated building is occupied, an inspection helps confirm that applicable regulatory requirements have been properly addressed. Codex conducts thorough inspections of key building elements to support a safe and compliant occupancy.
Codex performs pre-occupancy building inspections to verify compliance with applicable codes, standards and regulatory requirements.
Our inspections may include, but are not limited to:
fire protection systems;
fire alarm systems;
sprinkler systems;
emergency power supply;
fire protection zones;
fire-resistance ratings of building assemblies;
construction methods;
building systems;
exits and means of egress;
emergency lighting;
occupancy classifications, occupant loads and permitted uses;
floor areas and the overall building configuration.
Following the inspection, Codex provides observations and recommendations to help address outstanding compliance issues before the building is occupied.

Designed to accommodate 1,276 students, this new secondary school demonstrates the value of integrating regulatory requirements from the earliest stages of design. Throughout the project, Codex supported the design team by interpreting the requirements of the National Building Code of Canada (NBCC), conducting plan reviews, preparing alternative solution submissions, and verifying the building's code compliance prior to occupancy.
