Adapting compliance to project realities
Some projects require a more nuanced interpretation of codes and standards, particularly when architectural, heritage or technical constraints limit the direct application of regulatory requirements. Codex works with project teams to develop alternative, equivalent or compensating measures that balance code compliance, life safety and respect for the building.
The strict application of codes and standards is not always the most appropriate response to the realities of every project. Existing and heritage buildings, as well as projects with unique constraints, may require tailored solutions that achieve the intent of the code while preserving the building's architectural integrity.
Codex supports project teams in the analysis, technical justification and preparation of alternative, equivalent or compensating measures.
These submissions are developed to establish solutions acceptable to the Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJs), while addressing regulatory requirements, building constraints and project objectives.

The major renovation of the Salon bleu and Salon rouge required a regulatory approach tailored to the unique characteristics of an exceptional heritage building. Throughout the project, Codex worked alongside the design and construction teams to prepare several alternative solution submissions, enabling the project to meet the objectives of the National Building Code of Canada (NBCC) while preserving the architectural character of these historic spaces.
